THE
CULTURE OF GREED
For
lack of a better phrase, this is how I would describe what I feel is one
of the underlying root causes for a lot of what ails our society. Greed
mind you, has been around forever, but something happened in American
culture in the early 80's that I think is significant. The glorification
of conspicuous consumption, life styles of the rich and famous, the
"Wall Street" battle cry...Greed is Good, and the list goes on. Folks,
as I'm sure you'll agree, greed is NOT good. Greed does not grow the
marketplace, it consolidates it. Greed gave us the S&L debacle, and the
latest round of outrageous corporate and securities abuses. The net
result of this, 20 plus years down the pike, is an American Society
where the overwhelming majority of Americans are financially stressed.
In my view, it is this stress that is driving the polarization of
American Society. We need an American solution to this troubling
dynamic.
